At a meeting of the Executive Committee of South Northants Conservative Association the resolution below regarding HS2 was passed by the overwhelming majority of those present. The meeting was addressed by Andrea Leadsom, MP for South Northamptonshire, who opened the debate on HS2 in the House of Commons on 13th October.
"This Association strongly supports the Government’s wish to increase prosperity in the Midlands and the North of England but considers that HS2 will not achieve this and represents a massive potential misallocation of public funds.
We call on the Government to conclude the current consultation process by withdrawing its support for HS2 given: 1) the increasing evidence that the business case is fundamentally flawed; 2) the prospect of material damage to the economies of by-passed cities in both the Midlands and the North; 3) the diversion of resources for decades from other more urgent infrastructure projects nationwide; 4) the disruption to the West Coast Mainline entailed by the 8 year rebuilding of Euston and the delay to essential investment; and 5) the environmental damage and planning blight caused by the construction and operation of the line."
